We commemorated Ash Wednesday this week, the start of our 40-day Lenten season. In last weekend鈥檚 鈥楩aith鈥� column in The Sunday Age, Anne Rennie reflected on the tradition of Lent as a time of fasting, one that has roots in the Jewish roots of Christianity as well as replicating Christ鈥檚 40 days in the wilderness (Matthew 4; Mark 1). Encapsulating the tradition of Lent as a time of 鈥榦mission鈥�, Rennie paired this with our Catholic faith as a Resurrection of people, writing of this as also a time of 鈥榗ommission鈥�. 

How do we use our time of reflection on the sacrifice of Christ and the lead-up to Easter as a chance to better the lives of those around us? Project Compassion certainly provides a tangible way to contribute materially to others. As a people 'commissioned鈥� by Christ, we are also called to live our values in the positive and compassionate ways we interact with each other every day.

Opening College Mass & Induction of Student Leaders

Monday 19 February we will celebrate our Opening College Mass for 2024. I look forward to the honour of being inducted as 丝瓜视频 Principal alongside our Year 8-12 student leaders during this Mass (Year 7 leaders will be chosen on their upcoming camps). In 2024, we welcome new Year 12 Leadership positions in Faith, Social Justice and Sustainability.

Partnership

Thank-you to the huge number of parents and guardians who attended the Year Level information evenings over the past fortnight. It is gratifying to have such a tangible measure of our partnership with families and, personally, I appreciated the welcomes and chats with so many parents and guardians.

One of the great benefits of our community is the wide range of opportunities available. Last week, I attended the induction of the 26 new MACS Principals at the Catholic Leadership Centre. One of the highlights of the day was having our 丝瓜视频 Choir perform at the induction Mass, to the praise of all in attendance - including our celebrant.

2026 Year 7 enrolments now open

On Sunday 17 March we will hold our Open Day from 12.00 - 3.00pm. Welcome back to the 2024 school year. I hope the members of your family attending 丝瓜视频 have found the start of the new school year energising and that they are working in an environment where they can progress and achieve.

To streamline communication to families, 丝瓜视频 will send out a Student Digest every four weeks, providing a regular and timely update about student progress. The Student Digest collates all the entries from the Student Information and Learning Management Systems and summarises it in a single email. It will report the following, taking data from the digest period: 

Student absences including 

• Overall absences 
• Parent Notifications of absences 
  
• Late to School 
• Leave passes 
• Sick passes 

Learning Area information including

• Active tasks

• Tasks the student has submitted including results

• Tasks that the teacher has recorded as not submitted

Commendations over the digest period

School Activities including

• Future Activities in the next four weeks 
• Activities that have been attended during the digest period

Letter sent during the digest period

This will be emailed, there will be a separate digest for each 丝瓜视频 student and it will be sent to the Parent/Guardian contact email addresses. This is an extra communication, there will be no change to PAM, feel free to check it whenever you feel it is necessary.

The first Student Digest will be sent on Thursday 28th of February and it will report the first four weeks of school.

Building a Strong Foundation: The Importance of Partnerships in the Education of our Students

As we embark on a new year, it's essential to reflect on the elements that contribute to success for all our students. Beyond the laptops, programs and lesson plans, lies a crucial component: the partnership between educators, parents, and students. This collaborative effort sets the stage for learning to be filled with growth, development, and achievement.

Fostering a positive relationship between teachers and parents is paramount. This partnership creates a supportive network that enhances the educational experience for students. When parents are actively involved in their child's education, it sends a powerful message that education is a priority. 

Likewise, teachers play a crucial role in nurturing this partnership. By maintaining open lines of communication with parents and guardians, we can ensure that there is clarity about goals and expectations. Please visit PAM as regularly as you can so that you can be informed on your child鈥檚 progress.

Beyond the teacher-parent partnership, students also play an integral role in laying the groundwork for a successful learning journey. Encouraging students to take ownership of their learning fosters a sense of responsibility and accountability. By setting academic goals, practising effective study habits, and seeking assistance when needed, students become active participants in their educational journey. When students, parents, and teachers work together as a cohesive unit, the possibilities for growth and achievement are limitless.

It is important that students feel empowered to achieve their best by having a strong team behind them. In the next couple of weeks, you will receive a SIMON Digest, a summary of the progress that your child has made in the first four weeks of the school year. It is essential that use the information to inquire how your child is progressing and making the most of their time at the College.

Our collaborative approach contributes to the overall wellbeing of your child. It is important to consider the social and emotional needs of your child, as this can provide the necessary support and resources to promote mental health and resilience. At the College, we aim to foster a nurturing and inclusive environment, where students feel valued, respected, and empowered to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. Our expectation that all interactions must be Safe, Fair and Kind offer the scope to enable this. Please check in on how your child is feeling and what can be done to enhance their resilience and sense of belonging.

As we embrace the challenges and opportunities that the new school year brings, let us reaffirm our commitment to partnership and collaboration. By working together as a community of educators, parents, and students, we can create a learning environment where every individual has the opportunity to succeed and excel.

This week we had Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent - a time of preparation and reflection leading towards Easter.

Our EDGE students prepared and led our Ash Wednesday liturgies where we were reminded that this is a time when we walk with God to reconcile. 

St Paul鈥檚 letter to the Romans stated, 鈥淚t is no different for the Jews than for the non-Jew. Everyone has sinned.鈥� It is a temptation we all face as humans. This Sunday鈥檚 reading is a very brief rendition by Mark of the 鈥淭emptation of Jesus鈥�. Where the Lord needed to resist temptation and through his faith in the Father, succeeded.

The practice of ashing derives from the ancient Hebrews who would cover themselves in ash and wear hession as an irritation. Imagine having many mosquito bites and how itchy you would be. It is that irritation that was used as a reminder of the errors 鈥渟ins鈥� made by the person and remind them through faith and seeking forgiveness, they could rebuild their relationship with their God. Prior to receiving the Ashes in our Liturgy, we had a reflection which discussed the purpose of the ashes and whether they remove sin. The reflection said, 鈥淣o! The Ashes themselves are not magic. They, themselves, don't change anything about us. The Ashes are a sign that we are aware of our own sin, and that we desire to be forgiven and reconciled with God.鈥� So, as we begin this Lenten journey together, let us pray that we grow in faith, seek forgiveness, give to others, and walk humbly with our God.

Senior Years Report

丝瓜视频 is committed to providing an education where our students see their place in their environment and can view the world from multiple perspectives. This can be quite a tall order when they enter at year 7, considering where students are developmentally, in an egocentric stage of life. However, with guidance, challenge and exposure to diverse experiences we hope they have grown and matured into constructive and creative thinkers by the time they leave the college.

Being the beginning of a new year, students are exposed to new initiatives, invited to take part in opportunities, challenged to try new things and asked to commit to setting goals which require them to aim higher, expanding on what they can already do. New opportunities come in all different forms - accessing new subjects and material, mixing with new people, sharing ideas and constructively challenging and questioning what is being learnt. Students have positively embraced these opportunities and new experiences during the first two weeks. The energy and enthusiasm of a new year is still evident in the application and attitudes. High attendance figures support this opinion.

The challenge for parents and the school is maintaining this positive momentum in students as the days turn into weeks and terms. It would be unrealistic to believe every activity, every lesson of every day, and every item in an event will appeal to every individual at all times. To enjoy the school experience, learning to look for the good bits of a complex day is essential. In positive education terms this is known as 鈥榩anning for gold鈥�. Being adept at 鈥榩anning for gold鈥� promotes perseverance and satisfaction.

Panning for gold means discovering the 鈥榟idden treasure鈥� in a somewhat difficult situation. It is a good place to begin to get the most out of opportunities. This is where parents and the school must work together to maintain our conviction that showing up and taking part is a valuable personal trait. It is a quick solution to opt out of lessons, assemblies or activity days. So when you hear at home 鈥渨e aren鈥檛 doing much鈥� or 鈥淚 don鈥檛 need to be there鈥�, 鈥淚 don鈥檛 need it for my course鈥�. Draw the focus from the immediate reward of avoiding an activity to the longer game. You may not need it today or tomorrow; however, whatever you learn from the day, you take it forever and can draw from it at any time.

Learning to look for the good bits in what we do is a habit that costs nothing but has a positive impact. Panning for gold enables our young people to draw strength from these positive thoughts. An energy to enjoy the moment, their learning, and develop an appreciation of being exposed to something different or new. Taking part in all that the school offers diversifies experiences and assists to develop our young people鈥檚 view of their world. We look forward to students continuing to maintain their high participation to gain the most from their opportunities.

Middle Years Report

At the beginning of the year the Middle Years staff gathered and talked about how we treat each other and our students and what we would like this to look like this year. With the school鈥檚 motto of Illuminare et Ardere (to light up and be on fire) in mind we pulled out the candles, giving one to each member of staff. We lit just one candle, this candle was used to light their neighbour鈥檚 candle and from there the light was passed on until all were lit and we feared the fire alarm was going to get some unexpected early season action. All of the Middle Years Staff鈥檚 candles had a flame, and this had started with just one being lit. And, of course, the original was burning just as brightly as when it was first lit. A message we were trying to demonstrate was that 鈥淎 candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.鈥� (James Keller)

We want to have a frame of mind where we aim to look out for and support and help others, and those who do similar work to me are not competitors but rather allies. And that we all grow by having this mindset.

We want to be staff that share wisdom, take joy in our peers鈥� successes, boost each other up, help each other be the best they can be, and give each other permission to be who they are designed to be.

I think this is a message that is equally relevant to our students. When, in the school community, young people have the mindset of trying to put themselves forward before others and are solely concerned of their own plight, this can breed insecurity in themselves, mistrust in others and a feeling that they never are enough or never measure up. We want to encourage our students to look outside themselves and their fears and look to light other students' candles. We want them to take joy in their peers鈥� successes, to boost each other up, help each other be the best they can be and give each other permission to be who they are designed to be.

May 2024 be a year where we look to light each other's candles in the 丝瓜视频 Community and aim to illuminate the lives of everyone we encounter without setting off any fire alarms. That light can spread a long way, and our own lives might just burn even brighter too.

Head Middle Years

At 丝瓜视频, our commitment to Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is unwavering. Inspired by the teachings of the Catholic Church, we believe in the inherent dignity and worth of every individual, the pursuit of the common good, solidarity with the marginalised, and stewardship of creation. These principles form the foundation of our Social Justice Program, guiding us as we strive to create a more just and compassionate society.

Throughout the upcoming year, we will focus on four whole-school projects, each designed to empower our students to live out the values of CST in their daily lives and beyond.

Term 1: Project Compassion

Through various fundraising efforts, we will actively support Caritas Australia's Project Compassion, an initiative that empowers communitiePROs around the world to overcome poverty, injustice, and inequality.

Term 2: Winter Appeal

As the chilly winter months approach, we will join forces with the St. Vincent de Paul Society to support their Winter Appeal and participate in the Winter Sleep Out. These initiatives allow us to address the pressing issue of homelessness and provide vital assistance to those experiencing hardship in our local community.

Term 3: Fair Trade Fair

Promoting ethical consumption and supporting fair trade practices are integral to our commitment to social justice. Our Fair Trade Fair will showcase products that uphold fair wages, sustainable production methods, and respect for workers' rights, empowering consumers to make choices that align with their values.

Term 4: Wishing Tree

Reflecting the spirit of love and compassion central to the Christmas season, our Wishing Tree Appeal seeks to bring joy, comfort and hope to families in our local community facing financial hardship.

In addition to these whole-school initiatives, 丝瓜视频 offers various other activities and programs throughout the year that provide opportunities for students to engage with social justice issues, volunteer in the community, and deepen their understanding of Catholic values in action. Some of these will be introduced through our Religious Education courses, while others are offered as extracurricular activities. Two notable extracurricular activities are 鈥淔IRE Carriers鈥� and 鈥淏uilding Bridges鈥�.

FIRE Carriers is open to all Year 7-12 students. This program, facilitated through the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry, offers a unique chance to engage with Indigenous rights, culture, and reconciliation efforts.

Building Bridges is exclusively for Year 10 and 11 students. It provides opportunities to engage in interfaith dialogues and activities, promoting understanding and respect among students from diverse religious backgrounds.

We hope that many of our students take up the chance to actively engage in our social justice and outreach programs this year. By participating, you will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, cultivate empathy and compassion, and make a tangible difference in the lives of others.

As we embark on this journey of compassion and activism, I invite each member of our 丝瓜视频 family to join us in making a positive impact in our community and beyond. Together, let us live out the Gospel value of love that lies at the heart of our Catholic faith.

Welcome back. Embracing sustainability in education is a fantastic initiative that not only benefits the environment but also instils values and knowledge in our College and our wider community. Here are some ideas to make your school year more sustainable

飩� Sustainable transportation - Let鈥檚 encourage environmentally friendly options such as
walking, biking, car-pooling or using public transport to travel to and from school.

飩� Sustainable food practices - This can be as simple as using a refillable water bottle
each day at school. We have plenty of areas to refill throughout the day. Reducing
single use packaging in your snacks and lunches and purchasing locally grown food
will reduce food 鈥榤iles鈥� and carbon emissions.

飩� School Garden - We have an abundance of parsley and silver beet in the school
vegetable patch at the moment. The lemon trees are full on fruit in the process of
ripening along with some stunning sunflowers. So far this season, the school chooks
have beaten us to the strawberries.

A very special thank you to our wonderful maintenance team and members of staff (Caitlin Stewart, Bernard Green, Suzanne Fernandes, Alysia Silvagni, Jo Dutoit, Sharon Daley, Sara Love, Jane Tobler,  Maryanne Leavey, Shelia Boulton, Katie Hoffmann, Olivia Dixon, Dave Rennison, Tess Repalust) who cared for the school chooks over the summer break.

Environment & Sustainability Coordinator

We spoke to out School Leaders of 2024, to gain an understanding of how they are feeling leading into the new school year and why they wanted to be leaders at 丝瓜视频. This edition we hear from our School Captains Isobel Mugamu and Connor Haughie before their induction at the whole school assembly next week. Next Edition we will be introduced to our Vice Captains Bella Schneiders and Lucas Mandaliti - learning what and who inspires them and what they all want to achieve in 2024.

Reflection from Isobel -

I am very excited to be College Captain this year, as I truly love 丝瓜视频 - it has been such a joy to be a part of our community over the past five years! One of my main reasons for applying to be in a position of leadership was to give back to the college. I have received so many opportunities for personal growth and development here, and I now want to reciprocate to the school the amount of attention and support I鈥檝e been given. I wanted to be a part of the development of our school community, especially through meeting and interacting with students and staff in all different year levels and areas. Yes, it鈥檚 enjoyable to be part of the action, but it also is a large responsibility that I was willing to take on in order to build the community and spirit within 丝瓜视频.

With this in mind, a primary goal for this year is to work with student leaders in all other year levels, so they can develop their skills and ideas for future years. To me it is really important to see relationships between students across year levels build, and so through leadership we can work together to create more of those opportunities. Some of these opportunities may come to pass after my year level has graduated, but we鈥檇 love to leave a legacy of unity and see that in the years to come.

When I read about the life of Jesus in the Gospels, he was clearly a leader who wasn鈥檛 afraid to get his hands dirty! He was always interacting with people, forming connections and being impactful in the lives of those around him, in small but mighty ways. As a leader I try to emulate him through getting involved in events, helping with behind the scenes work for activities, lending my hands and attention to anyone needing assistance or a listening ear, and getting to know people across the school as I do that.

So, Year 7s, my best piece of advice for you beginning your years in high school is to try new things, and get involved in school life. Why not try learning an instrument, participate in EISM, or volunteer with school activities? Joining in makes the high school journey an unforgettable one, for all the right reasons. School becomes a place that isn鈥檛 only filled with homework and exams, but a place to enjoy life, have new experiences and make friends along the way!

Connors insight - 

The idea of being able to initiate change throughout the college has been a key factor for me to try out for leadership. I believe that being in a leadership position will allow me to make a beneficial impact and drive meaningful improvement within the college community. I also wanted to be a voice for the students which is very important as well, and act on their concerns or ideas to create the best possible environment for their time at school.

Our main goal this year as captains is to really focus on supporting and building the younger leadership within the college, to ideally achieve larger scale projects that may not necessarily be completed in our time at 丝瓜视频. By working alongside them, we will be able to guide them into senior leadership, where they will hopefully have the prepared skills and experience to produce positive change at school, based on the years of practice. While this doesn't immediately impact the college, we also aim to emphasise the idea of school spirit, and create a sense of community and belonging between houses, and year levels. I am very excited to be working with our leadership team this year across all levels, and believe that we have what it takes to leave a positive mark in our 丝瓜视频 community.

My parents have been a great influence on who I have become, and the contributions of my teachers as well have enabled me to achieve my best. I鈥檓 very grateful for these people as well as my friends who have been encouraging of me in my leadership journey.

To the Year Seven鈥檚, while moving out of primary school into a much larger environment might seem intimidating, it is important to take any opportunities that come your way, whether it be sporting, musical, academic, or other activities. These opportunities can help you find where you belong in our school, and give you a chance to develop your interests. Year 7 is a very exciting year with camp, excursions, and other activities taking place, and even though high school seems like it will go for a long time, it seriously doesn't, so it's important to appreciate the good times and moments that you have, as they can form some of the best memories when looking back years later.

Something that I enjoy to have a good school relaxation balance is walking the dog, which lets me get some fresh air and take my mind off of school. I also like to play and watch sports, especially during the football season where I will often go to games to support Geelong. These activities help break up my study and allow me to create a good social balance alongside schoolwork.

On Wednesday we Celebrated the start of Lent with Ash Wednesday Liturgies in the Mary MacKillop Chapel. Year 10 and 11 EDGE students helped with the services and the RE Music classes provided the music.  

The St Mary's Opening Assembly was held last week at the Tarneit campus. All students were transported to Tarneit and had a special lunch and joined to meet new friends in afternoon activity sessions. Award recipients from 2023 were celebrated and the new students leaders for 2024 were introduced.

Ethan Goktepe received the St Mary's Principal's Award. This award recognises a student who has shown positive actions or involvement undertaken over the previous year.

Jack Aston was chosen as the Student Leader for St Mary's in 2024. At St Mary's College for the Deaf, they believe in nurturing leadership skills and empowering students to become positive influencers in their community.

Students are chosen for their exceptional leadership qualities, commitment to the St Mary's College values, and dedication to fostering a positive school environment. They have full confidence in their ability to inspire their peers and contribute to the continued success of the college.

It was a great opportunity for students across the campuses to socialise and meet like-minded deaf and hard of hearing students from other St Mary's campuses. A pizza lunch was enjoyed along with fun games and activities.

Cafe N9ne has opened for the term with 9 Aqua taking charge of the kitchen and service. Head on down there to sample the delicious food and beverages on offer. We hear that they are very keen and eager to show off their new skills with an exciting updated menu!

They are open Tuesday to Friday from 8.30 until 11.30 to school students, staff and the general public - that means all parents!  Please come and show your support! 

Keeping P.A.C.E (Personal and Communal Engagement) is a semester based program run on a Thursday afternoon for Year 9 students. It is an opportunity for our students to take a hands-on approach to various issues in our community. Students will be rotated every 3 -4 weeks through different tasks across the semester.

This first rotation has students selecting to be involved in one of three options:

Marketing campaign for Project Compassion - preparing and distributing donation boxes, designing promotional material for school


Handover HeART bags - decorating bags that are given to Eastern Palliative Hospital to use for client belongings and given to families.


Drawing and painting full size flags of the various nationalities of the students at 丝瓜视频. This will be used as part of the Harmony Day celebrations.


Future rotations include Sustainability, Poverty and Homelessness and Refugees. Students will be involved in packing kits, building frog hotels, and various other tasks that will help them not only learn more about issues but also give back to the community in a practical way.

The Yr 7 Swim Day on Monday was held at Aquanation instead of Croydon Memorial Pool because of the extreme heat. Despite it being quite warm inside, the Yr 7 students took the opportunity to get in the water as much as possible. The students were able to mix with their Homeroom group in a different way compared to their normal classroom.

In the morning, students were being tested on their swimming skills in a range of activities including treading water, entries and swimming continuously for a period of time. Students also had the opportunity to have some time in the pool playing water games. The morning testing session purpose was to look at students swimming abilities before they go on camps over the next 2 years.

In the afternoon, a mini swimming carnival was held between the houses. Again the students were eager to get in the pool and keep cool. Students swam in 50m races in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. In a tight battle between the houses, Dominic in the end won the carnival.

The better swimmers from the carnival have now been invited to be part of the 丝瓜视频 EISM Swim team which will be competing in the EISM Division 1 carnival at MSAC on Tuesday 12th March during the day. The 丝瓜视频 swim team train twice a week on Tuesday and Friday mornings before school at Aquanation.

Developing problem-solving skills in Year 7 through Robotics

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, there is a growing recognition of equipping students with skills that extend beyond traditional academic subjects. Among these skills, coding and programming stand out as powerful tools for cultivating problem-solving abilities. Introducing coding at an early age, particularly in Year 7, can have a profound impact on a student's cognitive development and prepare them for the challenges of the future.




Critical Thinking and Logical Reasoning:

Coding requires students to think critically and logically. When Year 7 students engage in coding activities, they are prompted to break down problems into smaller, manageable parts. This process fosters analytical thinking, enabling them to approach challenges systematically and devise effective solutions.


Creativity and Innovation:

Contrary to the misconception that coding is solely about numbers and syntax, it is, at its core, a creative endeavor. By experimenting with code, students learn to think outside the box and discover innovative solutions to problems. This nurtures their creativity, an invaluable skill that extends beyond the realm of programming.


Persistence and Resilience:

Coding often involves trial and error, debugging, and continuous refinement. Year 7 students engaged in programming learn the importance of persistence and resilience. Facing coding challenges head-on teaches them to embrace setbacks as opportunities for growth, fostering a mindset that is crucial for success in any field.


Real-World Problem Solving:

Coding allows students to apply their skills to real-world problems. Whether it's creating a simple game, developing a website, or programming a robot, Year 7 students can see the tangible outcomes of their efforts. This hands-on approach to problem-solving instills a sense of accomplishment and motivates them to tackle increasingly complex challenges.


Teamwork and Collaboration:

Coding projects often require collaboration, mirroring the dynamics of the professional world. Year 7 students working on coding assignments learn how to communicate effectively, share ideas, and collaborate with their peers. These teamwork skills are essential for success in future academic and professional endeavors.


Digital Literacy:

In the digital age, understanding the fundamentals of coding is akin to acquiring a new form of literacy. Year 7 students exposed to coding early on are better prepared to navigate the technology-driven world they inhabit. This knowledge not only broadens their career prospects but also empowers them to be informed and responsible digital citizens.

Beyond the classroom, Year 7 students can further extend their coding abilities by joining the 丝瓜视频 Robotics Team. This team provides a unique and enriching environment where students can apply their coding skills to real-world challenges. Working collaboratively on robotics projects, students can enhance their problem-solving capabilities in a hands-on, practical setting.

The 丝瓜视频 Robotics Team engages students in designing, building, and programming robots for various competitions. Finally, there is the chance of travel through progressing through to National and International competitions. Our Robotics teams have been to Sydney and Adelaide over the last two years, with teams winning places in the International competition in the US before being cancelled by COVID.

This week the Year 7 Students had great fun making slime in Science! 

The Year 7 students commence their secondary science journey with a semester-based unit titled 鈥楤eing a Scientist鈥�. As the name suggests, this unit of work allows students to explore what it means to be a scientist and how and why we include such studies in our curriculum.
